Twitter: Welcome to The Virtual Cocktail Party
By Victoria Player
Whilst compiling the information for this article I sent out a Tweet (message) to my Twitter peeps asking if they’d mind sharing their top tips for attracting new followers. So thank you so much to those of you who kindly forwarded your findings. I appreciate it.
I also received a number of messages enquiring why I might want to attract more followers. Well, firstly it’s a topic of interest to many of you out there in the Twitterverse hence this post to you now, but more importantly, it’s about relationship building.
I like to look at Twitter as a ‘virtual cocktail party for business’ and goodness knows I like cocktails and I LOVE parties!
So what constitutes a good party?
Well, we all know that attendance is key. If nobody turns up it surely makes for a very dull evening. There’s no chatting, no networking, no catching up with news and no sharing of hot gossip and information. In my mind this is really what Twitter is all about and the more people you can bring in on the conversation the more rockin’ the party will be!
Let’s face it, nobody really wants to engage with Mr. Boring sitting in the corner. People just love chatting to those that are interesting, engaging and have a wealth of knowledge, connections and opinions to share.
So with this in mind begin by submitting Tweets (messages) that are varied. Don’t forget that you’re contributing to a discussion here so provide value. Give people a reason to want to find out more. Send out your thoughts and comments on elements of your industry and on life, love and universe if that takes your fancy. Share links to good resources and interesting blog posts and occasional share a link to something of your own.
Above all be interesting and inject some personality. Just remember, when it comes to good parties it's the fun characters and the people that contributed to the conversation that we remember!
I'd love to hear your thoughts, comments and experiences of Twitter. You can share your thoughts here.
